Antoine et Antoinette
RESTORED DIGITAL PRESENTATION!
"A film of great charm, zest and atmosphere" (John Gillet), Becker's tender social comedy transports its audience to a Parisian garret where a young couple struggles to survive both financially and romantically. Antoine (Roger Pigaut) is a foreman in a book bindery, while Antoinette (Claire Mafféi) operates a photo booth in a department store and, after hours, a sort of book club using her hubby's publishing-house rejects. When Antoinette loses a lottery ticket, various members of their penurious quartier turn out to have a stake in its return. Becker's fluid camerawork and cutting capture every nuance of the couple's combative but loving relationship, and the director expands his canvas to incorporate a vivid portrait of their neighbourhood. "The film walks an evocative line between realism and fantasy, capturing the energetic effervescence of the City of Light and showing how it complements the unbreakable bond between our impassioned heroes" (Time Out).
