David Lynch: The Big Dream

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

David Lynch

Shortly after the cancellation of Lynch's television series Twin Peaks, the director went into production on this feature-film prequel that follows the last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose murder provided the central mystery of the show's first season. Opening with FBI Agent Chester Desmond (Chris Isaak) investigating the disappearance of another teenage girl (an abruptly terminated storyline that anticipates the more radical structural breaks of Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive), as well as a brief cameo from Kyle MacLachlan's beloved Agent Dale Cooper, the scene shifts to the haunted town of Twin Peaks, where hard-partying homecoming queen Laura finds herself helplessly falling towards her horrific fate. Abandoning the quirky charm that had made the series an unlikely pop-culture phenomenon, Fire Walk With Me was famously booed at its Cannes premiere and was a commercial and critical flop in North America, but this former film maudit has since been reclaimed by many who see it as one of Lynch's saddest, most harrowing, and most beautiful works.
