Where Do We Go Now?
A both heartbreaking and darkly humorous exploration of sectarian tensions in a small village, Nadine Labaki's follow-up to her acclaimed debut Caramel won the 2011 TIFF People's Choice Award and ushered its director-star onto the global stage. Like the church and mosque that stand side by side, the residents of the town have long coexisted despite differences in their religious beliefs. When tensions erupt into violence nearby, however, the village women try — by any means necessary — to keep their men from killing each other. Interspersed with musical numbers that nod to Labaki's early career directing music videos for superstar Nancy Ajram, Where Do We Go Now? is an homage to, and a plea for, peace.
